Certainty

The illness did not speak to me in the voice of madness. It spoke in the voice of certainty. It was calm, logical, and laid the facts out in one unbroken line in which everything fitted.

Getting well was uglier. It was full of “I don’t know”, “perhaps”, “most probably”.

I learned that a sentence that admits no doubt is not the truth. It is a symptom.

And you?

  • Does a sentence that admits no doubt make you wary?

  • Do you prefer “I do not know” to smooth certainty?

  • Can certainty be a symptom rather than a strength?
